I met Shauna DeMoss in November of 2003. She called the house looking for someone that could help her family with handling lessons and showing dogs in conformation. That was to be the beginning of a long relationship with Castleguard. As the next few months went by and lessons progressed the DeMoss family became more and more interested in conformation and winning.
On Sunday April 25,2004 myself and my husband made our first trip to Cedaredge to see the kennels and meet all of the dogs. That afternoon myself, Jeff, Shauna and Merle all sat down and worked out an agreement to compete and show the dogs. That agreement was very simply I would train, show and travel with the dogs, and take Castleguard to #1 within 5 years. Shauna was to pay her share of all travel expenses and entry fee's on her dogs. I would also train the girls to take over handling in 5 years. In return for my services, when the time came I would get the dog of my choice no strings attached, free and clear. This has been our working agreement for the past 5 years In the past 5 years I have had a no less than 1 Castleguard dog living at my home at all times.
Over the last 5 years I have traveled to many shows all over the country with dogs and the girls winning and meeting my end of the deal.
This year arrangements were made to travel the the PA Nationals the weekend of 4/24-26. The girls and I left on the drive on Monday 4/20. As everyone well knows Shauna's kennels won WD, WB, BOW, 1st award of merit and BOB at the nationals show along with many other awards.
My job is now done.
The girls and I returned home on Thursday4/30 at 1 p.m. ending our long 10 day trip.
When Shauna and Merle arrived at the house to pick up girls and dogs I had a long talk with them. I said I felt that there had to be a formal end to the contract just as there was a beginning. I had taken her to #1 with everything they have won last year and this year and it was time for the girls to take over, they are ready and she no longer needed me. I was very proud of everyones accomplishments. I informed Shauna and Merle at that time that Midas was my choice for my dog in payment. Shauna was told that I understood he was important to her breeding program so these were the conditions I offered even tho that was not part of the original deal.
1. Castleguard would have unlimited use for any bitch they own or co-own
2. Any outside bitches used we would split the stud fee's
3. I felt Midas was capable of being a top AKC working dog. If it turned out he was and I needed, I would neuter Midas in 2011 but before I did I would have him collected and frozen at my expense so there would be no damage done to the future of her kennels. I asked them to go home and think about it and let me know in a day or 2.
Now how have we gone from this to where we are now.
